Profile
Peter Blake
PETER BLAKE Peter Blake is one of the best known artists of his generation. Born in 1932, he attended Gravesend Technical College (1946-51) and School of Art and transferred to the Royal College of Art in London. The cover design for Beatles’ album 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' (1967) was one of his greatest successes, alongside his collages, silkscreens, engravings, sculptures and prints. Blake also made sleeves for Band Aid single, ‘Do They Know It's Christmas?’, Paul Weller’s ‘Stanley Road’ and Oasis’ ‘Stop the Clocks’. Sir Peter Blake, RA, was knighted in 2002, and is commonly known as the Godfather of British Pop Art. Blake's early work is dominated by fantastic scenes from the world of the circus and naturalistic paintings with autobiographical elements, which paved the way for English Pop Art. The colourful huddle of people featured on the Sergeant Pepper cover exemplifies his style: among Beatles dressed in psychedelic uniform are Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, and a child wearing a Rolling Stones T-shirt. As Blake said, ‘I talked to the Beatles at length about what the cover would be. I worked out it would show the moment after they had played in a bandstand in the park. My big contribution was the life-size cutouts, the magic crowds.’ Peter Blake’s newest works, ‘Running’ and ‘That Lucky Old Sun’ are exclusive portfolios of signed limited edition prints, available now at Balman Gallery. In ‘Running’, Peter Blake is producing a portfolio of 10 limited edition prints, to celebrate 30 years of the Great North Run and to showcase the international pedigree of the run and the heritage of running. Each image is available as a giclee print with silkscreen varnish, measuring 13.5 x 16.5 inches and from a signed edition of 75, and features images of the world’s most iconic half marathon, cigarette cards and vintage photographs of runners, medals, posters and much more. The majority of found images and objects Peter Blake has appropriated are from the Great North Run archives or sourced from the North East. Peter Blake’s mother was born in South Shields (where the race ends) and moved to Kent in the 1930s, so this new suite can be seen as Blake’s homage to the area. ‘That Lucky Old Sun’ comprises a cloth-bound, hand-numbered book, signed by both Brian Wilson of the Grammy award winning Beach Boys and Peter Blake. It includes an essay and exclusive interviews with Brian Wilson, plus a CD pressing of the Brian Wilson album ‘That Lucky Old Sun’ and an original VIP pass from a live performance of the album. The book is accompanied by 12 collage screenprints by Peter Blake, and three facsimile copies of the lyrics for a new Brian Wilson song, ‘Midnight’s Another Day’. The collection is presented in a hand-crafted box, made in Italy, and bound in two luxurious blue cloths, representing the colours of the Californian sky and ocean. The box is also blocked in gold and silver with a portrait of Wilson inset on the inside cover. The box set is from an edition of 1,000.
