Profile
Brian Pike
Brian Pike ‘Although my work has superficial similarities to Pop Art and Surrealism, I don't think it can be pigeonholed. It's 100% personal. The only tradition it belongs to is that of artists like William Blake or Samuel Palmer - stubborn English eccentrics who simply aren't interested in fitting in with the artistic prejudices of their times... They are part of a constantly-evolving world with its own elusive logic — the magical, bittersweet realm of childhood, briefly glimpsed again from afar.’ Brian Pike Brian Pike is a Yorkshire-based painter, writer and sound artist. After receiving a doctorate from Cambridge University for his research into colour psychology he taught aesthetics at Cambridge, Durham and the Open University. Inspired by Renaissance painting, he evolved his own highly unique approach to mixed-media painting, carefully layering different elements to create vibrant colours and lustrous surfaces not immediately recognisable as paint on paper. A growing interest in oriental art and extensive travels in Asia - especially Japan - triggered a shift from the rarified abstraction of his earlier work to a more stubbornly personal vision. "Every one of my paintings, without exception, is a self portrait. The imagery may be naive and whimsical but the loss, doubt and bafflement - along with the occasional ray of hope - are all very, very real." Brian has exhibited widely in the UK, and his perverse blend of gentle humour and existential melancholy has won him commissions from Europe, America and Asia, and sponsorship from Vodafone plc. He also records electronic soundscapes and installation music under a variety of aliases.
