Profile
Kate Van Suddese
Kate Van Suddese ‘I have been influenced throughout my painting career to a great extent by the wonderful drama and light in Turner’s work and the iridescent beauty captured by the Pre-Raphaelites. In all, the interest in beauty, light and other worldliness, where the mundane becomes extraordinary and the familiar becomes surreal is something I aim for in my own work,’ Kate Van Suddese Kate Van Suddese has been painting for over 25 years, using oil on canvas to create her distinctive seascapes and coastal impressions. Her works are created in series, progressing through colour, form and contrast to seek new ways of capturing the elusive nature of the sea and its relationship to land and the observer. Each series informs the next, creating planned and unplanned diversions as she explores the differing aspects of the nature of the sea. Where one series may focus on the ethereal nature of light and reflection, another series may focus on the tumultuous depths of the water itself. Often her inspiration comes from specific places, events or lines of poetry that she translates into marine imagery, using the language of the seascape to convey a momentary feeling or event. Most of Kate’s work holds very little evidence of man: she prefers to use the sea to express emotion. Kate’s turbulent skies are reminiscent of John Martin’s. In ‘The Adventure Begins’, Kate has created a beautifully realised city, and the detail of a tree. The city seems mystical, Martinesque again, swept up into the stormy, troubled atmosphere by the turbulent weather swirling around it, illuminated by the frothing tops of the breaking waves and the light coming through the clouds. Kate is a graduate of Sunderland University. She has exhibited widely, for example at ‘Open Eye Exhibition’ Durham Art Gallery 2002, The Mall Galleries, London (‘Not The Turner Prize’ Exhibitor), The Leith Gallery, Edinburgh and McCauley Fine Art, Edinburgh, amongst others. Solo exhibitions include those held at Van Der Grou Galleries and the Leith Gallery. ‘Where the sea meets the land, it creates a place of magical effect. The sea is a mystical space where the unseen is seen, and where dreams are conceived: ferociously alive, powerful, yet comforting, soothing in its ever changing beauty. It is parent, lover and listener. Where I see the unseen I see myself. And I find peace.’
