Matthew Roby is a designer, illustrator and sculptor who creates strange and fabulous creatures. An imaginative range of materials is employed, from recycled materials such as ball cocks to cast resin and other media. A graduate of the University of Central Lancashire, he was later artist in residence at Drumcroon Art Gallery in Wigan.
Popular culture, literature, live music, film, animals and human behaviour are all rich sources of inspiration to him. With a background in advertising, animation, storyboarding, model making, book illustration and public art, he also set up his own production company, ‘Pickled Circus’. His many commissions include sculptures for parks, museums, schools and business foyers. ‘Ambidextrous’, a giant, typewriting millipede, is a major public art sculpture. His children’s book, ‘The Crocodile who Ate Christmas’ features many of his funny and fabulous creatures and he also wrote the storyline. Another major project is ‘Reel’ animation. Matthew Roby designed every visual aspect of the film, demonstrating his trademark enthusiasm and passion.
The scale, character and popularity of Roby’s work and commissions ensures that he is a highly collectible artist.
