Profile
Andy Bates
At university Andy studied English and Archaeology and he continues to study the lives and beliefs of traditional and native peoples. Having been instructed by a master saddler and having himself worked with leather for over 25 years, Andy makes pieces of skin and hide and other natural materials and uses skills which have been practiced for millennia. These pieces reflect his immersion in shamanic lore and in mysticism; indeed Andy has been described as “a natural mystic”. Andy also makes historical replica artefacts and has worked for the Discovery Channel and for the BBC. Andy has taught design and traditional leatherwork at Cleveland Art College, at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle at present teaches in Hexham, UK. Andy has been commissioned by the Turner Prize winning potter Grayson Perry to make a unique and striking bag designed by the artist.
