CARTER, Graham

Originally from Gloucester, Graham Carter studied towards his Foundation course in Cheltenham before taking an Illustration degree at Brighton University, and then a Post-Graduate Diploma at Central St. Martins, graduating in 2000. With a studio and a home in Brighton, Graham Carter's original and clever illustrative art takes many forms and one of the most rewarding aspects of his work lies in the tiny, individual details almost hidden within his paintings that the viewer is tempted into exploring closely. Little creatures may poke out from behind a hedge, or a box bird might perch on the branch of a tree. Graham Carter creates a mystical world peopled by suggestions of intriguing, secret stories, colourful, cartoonish figures and charmed landscapes. Some of Graham’s pieces are inspired by popular culture, such as ‘Red on You’, which is inspired by cult film, ‘Shaun of the Dead’. ‘Wandering Marionette’ is inspired by the Royal Deluxe giant elephant puppet. Graham was a founding member of the illustration collective Peepshow, working on installations and commissions such as those from Diesel Jeans and the BBC. Many UK broadsheets have commissioned work by this brilliant and popular artist. Solo Commissions Orange Bupa Visa Camelot Award 2007 ‘Visual Arts Prize’ at the Brighton Festival Fringe
