ARTIST BIO
Born in North Wales of Italian parentage, Carl Melagari now lives in Bristol. He was awarded a degree in Illustration from the University of the West of England.
Carl's work focusses on both the human form and the urban landscape. Working from both life and models, thick, rich oil paints, combined with density of pigment, give a sense of life radiating from Carl's canvas: evoking the vigour of the human form. His approach to painting explores the treatment and handling of paint whilst conveying expressionistic nudes and landscapes. His work draws from sculptural influences as well as from colourists. A monochromatic palette is often used to generate the idea that he is playing with the reduction of form, often abstracting and delineating parts to create a more non-figurative, spiritual feel. He often uses this muted palette to replicate a sense of isolation and seclusion. Carl applies paint liberally, so that it drips spontaneously, to literally and symbolically mirror the sitter’s personality.
Carl has exhibited widely and internationally, for example at Mostra di Pittura di San Bonifacio, Italy and The Salon Des Nations, Paris.
